Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran announced that individuals who have not included their child’s name in the birth certificate after 15 years can apply to do so by providing the necessary documents before December 31, 2024.
A birth certificate is essential as proof of a child’s legal citizenship. It must be registered within 21 days of birth according to the Birth and Death Registration Act, which also allows for the issuance of a free birth certificate. An official release from Ripon Building stated that a birth certificate is only complete if the child’s name is included.
For cases where a birth is registered without a name, parents or guardians can submit a written affidavit to the appropriate birth/death registrar within 12 months of registration at no cost.
