The damaged drainage lines are not just an eyesore; they also present serious health hazards, putting the public at significant risk.
Monsoon season has returned, bringing with it the persistent problem of sewer overflow. While drainage overflow is typical in low-lying areas during heavy rains, even the wards in Kolathur, the high-profile constituency of Chief Minister MK Stalin, are not immune.
The malfunctioning drainage lines are not only an eyesore; they also pose significant health risks to the public. Residents of Poompuhar Nagar in Kolathur have expressed their concerns about overflowing drains on 11th Cross Street.
One resident, Sudarsan V from Poompuhar Main Road, stated, “The overflowing manholes are due to improper line connections and a lack of regular desilting. The manholes are only cleaned when complaints are made, and there’s still no long-term solution. While Kolathur has seen improvements in roads and parks, the reconstruction of drains is urgently needed.”
The recent rains completely waterlogged the street, with even light showers causing flooding. This results in the mixing of drainage and stormwater, leading to various health hazards for nearby residents.
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, noted, “This is a residential area, and the overflowing drains during rains lead to mosquito breeding. The lack of maintenance is a serious issue.”
When contacted, a representative from the Greater Chennai Corporation assured that the problem would be addressed by Saturday.
