Chennai Corporation collected 213.6 metric tons of firecracker waste during the Deepavali celebrations.

The hazardous waste has been gathered and transported to the processing plant in Gummidipoondi.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has reported the collection of a total of 213.61 metric tonnes of firecracker waste during the Deepavali festivities. Among the 15 zones, Valasavakkam (zone 11) generated the most waste, with 21.69 metric tonnes collected.

This hazardous waste has been collected and transported to the processing plant in Gummidipoondi. On Deepavali day alone, the civic body gathered 53.86 metric tonnes of firecracker waste across the city. Perungudi (zone 14) had the highest contribution, with 6.04 metric tonnes, followed closely by Valasavakkam (zone 11) at 5.57 metric tonnes, according to GCC data.

Additionally, by Friday afternoon, the total amount of cracker waste collected in the city reached 159.75 metric tonnes. Anna Nagar (zone 8) was responsible for the largest share at 15.48 metric tonnes, while Ambattur (zone 7) followed with 14.78 metric tonnes.

Among the 15 zones, Shollinganallur (zone 15) produced the least waste, with only 3.73 metric tonnes collected over the two days. A senior GCC official noted that conservancy workers worked tirelessly from dawn to dusk to restore cleanliness across the city. The Chennai Corporation ramped up garbage clearing efforts on October 31 and November 1, with Valasavakkam leading the way with 21.69 metric tonnes, followed by Teynampet (zone 9) with 20 metric tonnes and Anna Nagar (zone 8) with 19 metric tonnes.
