AIADMK wins Salem, makes clean sweep of mayoral posts

Chennai, Oct 21: The ruling AIADMK has won the Salem mayoral post, thus making a clean sweep of the mayoral posts in the state that were up for grabs in the October 17 elections. In Salem, its candidate S Soundappan secured the mayoral post, getting 1,92,866 votes, defeating his nearest DMK rival S D Kalaiamudhan by a margin of 95,073 votes.

Following are the votes secured by various parties: S Soundappan (AIADMK) 1,92,866; S D Kalaiamudhan (DMK) 97,793; A R Elangovan (DMDK) 43,155; Era Arul (PMK) 16,853; R Vijayavarman (Congress) 14,666; V Ramesh (BJP) 7,872; and R Ramachandran (MDMK) 2,013.

The AIADMK has won all the 10 mayoral posts in the state – Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Erode, Tirupur, Thoothukudi and Vellore. The party trailed behind the DMK only once – at the commencement of counting in Vellore mayoral election - but quickly recovered the lead and there was no looking back after that. The lead in all the 10 mayoral post elections kept increasing with every round of votes being counted.
