AIADMK’s KO punch to Alagiri in Madurai

Chennai, Oct 21: The ruling AIADMK delivered a knock-out punch to its archrival M K Alagiri, son of DMK president M Karunanidhi, by winning the Madurai mayoral post. AIADMK’s V V Rajan Chellappa secured 3,12,226 votes, defeating his nearest DMK rival Bhagyanathan by a big margin of 1,73,897 votes.

The DMDK finished third in the election and the Congress, fourth.

The Madurai mayoral post was considered a prestigious battle since Alagiri controlled Madurai during the DMK regime. As a powerful Union minister and son of the DMK chief, Alagiri wielded enormous power in Madurai and the adjoining districts in southern Tamil Nadu.

In the Madurai mayoral election, Ka Kaviyarasu (DMDK) got 88,788 votes and I Siluvai (Congress) 22,904 votes. Votes secured by the other parties are: U Rajendran (BJP) 14,352 and A Bhaskar Sethupathy (MDMK) 12,619, and D. Anbarasan (PT) 5,480.
