Reaching out to rural folk

Florence Jeba Mary lends a helping hand to many who are in need of help.

Armed with a degree in tailoring, she thought that the best way to serve society was to help the uneducated.

She started free tailoring and handicrafts classes and trained students and also widows. Many young girls who failed in class 10 and plus-two also joined this course.

Florence’s motto is to uplift women in the remote rural areas. So she trained them in tailoring, embroidery designs, stitching woollen mats and making wire basket and flower vase and so on. She trained and educated more than 225 women.

In Madurantakam taluk some of the villages which have benefitted are Saravambakkam, Sithammur, Villanganur, Nallammur, Kattudevaththur and Kunangkaranai.

Florence is a trendsetter as she has arranged for five widow remarriages because many village girls get married very young and lose their spouse.

The do-gooder shifts from village to village periodically in order make the economically backward women strong.

She is married and has two daughters. Her husband and family are very supportive of all her endeavours.

She is also a benefactor for many poor students whom she has helped to do higher studies.

Florence lives in Kuthanur village, near Guduvancheri, a suburb of Chennai and radiates warmth and friendliness with a keen eye to help people in distress.
