Margazhi Music Darbar 2017 by GRT Jewellers

The Dayawati Modi Foundation today awarded one of India’s veteran sarod player, Amjad Ali Khan, with the prestigious ‘Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Culture and Education’ for the year 2017 for his contribution towards Indian Classical Music. The award comprising a cash prize of Rs. 2.51 lakhs, a silver shield and scroll of honour was presented to the distinguished artist to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of Late Smt. Dayawati Modi.

Dr. Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India felicitated Amjad Ali Khan with the award today at an event held in the capital at Sri Sathya Sai Auditorium, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. While congratulating Amjad Ali Khan, Dr. Thaawar Chand Gehlot, “I am extremely happy to present this award to the veteran sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan. His contribution towards Indian Classical Music has been immense throughout these years. I also wish to thank the Dayawati Modi Foundation for its continuing and untiring efforts in recognizing the talent and work of gifted persons in the fields of art, culture and education. Awards like these encourage the upcoming generation to make an effort to excel in their areas of expertise.”

The distinguished artist thanked the foundation for its support and said, “I am greatly humbled to receive this award. I would like to thank Dayawati Modi Foundation for bestowing this prestigious award on me.”

Amjad Ali Khan is one of the undisputed masters of the music world. Born to sarod maestro Haafiz Ali Khan, he gave his first performance at the age of six, and is credited with reinventing the technique of playing the sarod. Over the course of a distinguished career spanning more than six decades, Amjad Ali Khan has won numerous accolades including a Grammy nomination, the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum, Unicef's National Ambassadorship and the Fukuoka Cultural grand prize. He has performed at venues the world over including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, as well as at the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize Concert in 2014 in Oslo, Norway. Samaagam, his first sarod concerto, has been performed by the Britten Sinfonia, Orchestre National d'lle de France, Orchestred'Auvergne, London Philharmonia, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Welsh National Opera and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Amjad Ali Khan has also been a visiting professor at Stanford University, University of New Mexico and Jacob’s School of Music.

The noted artist joins the impressive list of previous awardees, which includes names like Shri Amitabh Bachchan, Late Rev. Mother Teresa, Shri Ravi Paranjape, Shri Satish Gujral, Pandit Jasraj, Jagjit Singh, Shri Manjit Bawa, Smt. Asha Bhosle, Shri Sayed Haider Raza, Shri Anish Kapoor, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Shri Tyeb Mehta, Dr. Abdul Waheed Khan, Shri Akbar Padamshree, Her Holiness Onshi Nakashini Setsuko of Japan, Prof. Lokesh Chandra, Mr. Kent Walwin, Dr. Karan Singh, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Mr. Paresh Maity, Ms. Anjolie Ela Menon , Mr. Subodh Gupta, Mr. Anup Jalota & Ven. Dayawati Modi Award is among the highest cash awards in the country in the field of Art, Culture and Education. The award has been instituted by the Dayawati Modi Foundation for Art, Culture and Education of the Modi group in the memory of Late Smt. Dayawati Modi, wife of Late Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi, founder of the Modi Group. Late Smt Dayawati Modi was a great philanthropist and an educationist. The Foundation has established schools and colleges, libraries and hostels for students. It also seeks to spread the knowledge of Indian art and culture through cultural shows, exhibitions and seminars. The annual Dayawati Modi Award is a step in this direction and awards a person of eminence in the field of art, culture and education.
