Rotary will play a major role in eradicating illiteracy in India

- Gary Huang, Past Rotary International President

“As an emerging economy with great human potential, there is no doubt in India’s progression to become a self sufficient country in all respects”, said Mr. Gary Huang, Past Rotary International President on his two day visit to Chennai. “Illiteracy hindering the growth of an individual, which in turn affecting a country’s growth in this 21st century is pitiable and here is where Rotary will play a major role in eliminating this dire disease. Through Rotary Foundation, we are supporting many schools with facilities such as computers, proper lighting, tables and chairs etc. ”

He added, “I am happy with the way Rotary Clubs in India are working collectively towards a goal. There is no greater success story in terms of team effort than polio eradication in India by the Rotarians. If the same spirit is showed upon education, India can become almost completely literate within a decade.”

PRIP Gary inspected the Cancer Screening Bus donated to Penn Nalam by Rotary Club of Madras East. The Bus costing Rs. 45 Lakhs is used to visit remote areas to screen the women for cancer incidence. He visited the Chennai Corporation Community College in Bhemannapet which trains students in Spoken English, Computer Operation and Paramedical courses. He inspected the Foundation for Vocational Training which runs a baking and confectionery unit in this premises. This unit called – Winners Bakery is started by Mr. Mahadevan of Hot Breads, Chennai Corporation and Rotary Club of Madras East with an objective to train unemployed youth and school dropouts in baking and confectionery.
