Radha Silk Emporium, better known as Rasi Silks, has been chosen for the fourth Sundaram Finance ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ award, an annual award to recognise the long-standing contribution to the culture and heritage of Mylapore.
The award was presented by T T Srinivasaraghavan, MD, Sundaram Finance Ltd.

Started in 1900 by K. Tiruvengadam Chettiar and his brothers as wholesalers, operating from their home, Rasi Silks belongs to an era when traditions and cultures were woven into rich silk fabric that found its way to the royal homes to adorn the beautiful women of bygone days. With six generations of experience in the silk trade behind them, they soon became highly successful and ventured into retailing.
In the 1920s, they opened their first showroom, Radha Silk Emporium, which then became popularly known as Rasi Silk. Rasi was the first company to start a garment factory in India with industrial machines imported from Germany.
Srinivasaraghavan said, “For over 112 years, Rasi Silks has been a Mylapore landmark and has become synonymous with high-quality silk sarees and legendary customer loyalty. The commitment to customer care and timeless quality has ensured that Rasi will remain a proud and enduring symbol of Mylapore. This award is to celebrate and honour Rasi Silks for upholding the glorious traditions of Mylapore.”
Previous recipients of the award include bookseller R K Azhwar, legendary musician Rajam and Dabba Chetti Kadai.
