The 10th edition of the four-day Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival concluded January 8, 2012 night. The idea behind the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival is to use the spaces in this zone to host events related to local heritage and lifestyle.

The festival kicked off at 6.30 a.m. on January 5 at Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore with a mikeless group concert by 25students of P S Senior Secondary School.
During the four-day festival, over 100 children - under 15 years of age - presented mikeless group concerts at the Chess Square of Nageswara Rao Park.
The kolam contest on North Mada Street over the weekend continued to draw participants from across the city and outside with over 200 people showcasing their creative skills.
The big additions this year include: ‘Vanna Mayil’, a dance visual music production on Mylapore, puppet shows on Ramayana and Bhakta Prahalada on all four evenings, a dance ballet by Anusham Group on January 7 evening at the main stage in front of Kapaleeswarar Temple and a vintage car display on Sunday evening.
Commenting on the festival, T.T. Srinivasaraghavan, managing director, Sundaram Finance Ltd, said, “When we started off 10 years ago, in January 2003, the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival was primarily centered on the kolam contest on Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend in January. During this period, we have expanded the festival both in terms of locations (10 now), traditional events (30) and, most importantly, the participants (over 400) as well. Several thousands of young school- and college-going kids (both as participants and visitors) have now become an integral part of this festival and that, to us, is very heartening for the very idea of the festival is to showcase the ‘flavour of Madras’, the Madras that once was.”
Events around Kapaleeswarar Temple
The festival had an Art Zone (East Tank Street), Craft Zone (Pitchu Pillai Street), Women’s Zone (Kumara Gurunathan Street), Handicrafts Demo (near the chariot) and the Food Zone (Sundareswarar Street). There were also the traditional games on display with pallankuzhi and daayakattam contests bringing together the old and young showing their analytical skills.
Events for children - Nageswara Rao Park
Over the weekend, hundreds of children - all aged below 15years of age - took part in Rock Painting, Paper Craft and Painting Workshop. There was also a Chess Tourney for children.
10,000 environment-friendly bags
As part of the environment-friendly initiative for the second year running, and to discourage the use of plastic bags, around 10,000 environment-friendly cloth bags, with eco-friendly messages on the bag, were handed over to visitors in exchange for plastic bags.
