Transformational Teaching need of the hour

The 8th Kuruvila Jacob Memorial Oration was held today at a packed auditorium with enthusiastic Teachers drawn from private and corporation schools in attendance. The Chief Guest for the evening was Mr. Ramji Raghavan, Founder & Chairman, Agastya International Foundation, Andhra Pradesh. Mr. KM, Mammen, CMD, MRF Ltd. Mr. S. Viji, Chairman, Sundaram Finance and Mr. N. Murali, Co-Chairman, Kasturi & Sons, the prime movers of the Kuruvila Jacob Memorial Educational Trust were present along with Mr. VK Chandrakumar, Committee member.

Speaking on the topic, “Transformational Teaching”, Mr. Ramji Raghavan said, “Our country needs to open up the creative potential of the students. More than the systematic teaching, the educational institutions should focus to kindle the scientific temper of the students when they are young. This is where the role of Teachers becomes crucial, to inspire and motivate young minds, make them think critically and create curiosity for experimental learning.”

He added, “Inquiry-based model of education to raise the level of creativity is the key for a brighter India. India’s literacy rate has increased over the years but when it comes to innovation, still our country has space for improvement. Agastya’s work is simple – our soul focus is to spark curiosity, nurture creativity and build confidence in youths of the villages, thereby showing them the interesting dimension of studies. This model has worked very well and helped us to reach millions of students, transforming their outlook on education.”

Ramji appreciated the work done by Kuruvila Jacob Foundation which focuses on training the Teachers which in turn impact students very positively. He complimented the organizers for relentlessly pursuing the path of progress for teachers to make the impact.

About Kuruvila Jacob Initiative:

To honour Mr. Kuruvila Jacob, a great educationist and humanist on his birth centenary in 2004, a substantial body of his students and alumni of Madras Christian College High School launched the Kuruvila Jacob Initiative for Promoting Excellence in School Education on 3rd August 2004. The initiative is managed by the Kuruvila Jacob Memorial Educational Trust comprising the old students of Mr. Kuruvila Jacob, from the Madras Christian College High School.

Every year an annual function is held on August 3rd, with a renowned personality being invited to address the audience on “current educational issues”. The First Kuruvila Jacob Memorial oration was delivered by Shri Kapil Sibal, the then Hon’ble Union Minister [HRD], the second by Dr. C.N.R Rao, National Research Professor, the third by Mr. Anil Sadgopal, educationist, fourth by Prof. Raghuram Rajan, the then Chief Economic Advisor, Government of India, the fifth by Ms. Vimala Ramachandran, a National Fellow and Professor, National University for Educational Planning and Administration, the sixth by Prof. Mahesh Rangarajan, Director, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, the seventh by Prof. Rohit Dhankar, Director of School of Education and Director of Academic Development, Azim Premji University and today the 8th oration by Mr. Ramji Raghavan, Founder & Chairman, Agastya International Foundation, Andhra Pradesh.
