70 year old Educational Book Store presented with the ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ Award

:The 70 year old Vijaya Storeshas been chosen for the 9thSundaram Finance ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ Award.TT Srinivasaraghavanm, MD, Sundaram Finance presented the award to S. Ganesh, Proprietor, Vijaya Stores on Sunday evening as part offinal day events at the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival 2017.

Uncompromising standards and undivided attention to the smallest of details are the hallmark of this store to this day. Vijaya Stores was born in 1947 as a Thinnai Shop on South Mada Street, a modest Venture of its founder late Shri. Sundaram. Such is its esteem for educational books that it is the first and often the final destination for scores of students and parents. Today the store has over 30000 books across all classes and boards and is a major distributor of books to all schools.
On receiving the award in front of a huge audience, Ganesh said, ‘My father (Sundaram) used to tell me that it is truly a great blessing to have got the opportunity to sell educational books near the Kapali temple and he wanted us to attend to all those who came to our store with great care. Today, in this 70th year it is truly a great honour that ‘Sundaram’ Finance has recognised us for our service. Through this award, I feel that my father himself has blessed us from above.”
Sundaram Finance had in January 2009 instituted an Annual ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ Award to recognise every year in January one long time resident or institution of Mylaporewho /that has contributed significantly to the culture and heritage of Mylapore. Previous recipients of the Sundaram Finance Spirit of Mylapore award include road side book seller RK Azhwar, DabbaChettiKadai, Oldest Mridangam Shop, Lady Sivasami Girls School and Shri. Ramachandran, Sanskrit Professor of Vivekananda College.
