Salem Kottai Mariamman Temple

Kottai Mariamman is situated in the centre of the Salem in Tamil Nadu. It is said to be about 500 years old.

Presiding deity - Kottai Mariamman

About 500 years ago, it was said the Cheran kings came to the location and built a big wall where they also built a big temple for Shiva and Mariamman.

But, as of now, the long wall is not there and only the name Kottaimedu remains.

The goddess was transported to a place named Thirumani Muthaaru. Though there was a Shiva and Mariamman temple, now Mariamman is the most famous one.

Though the goddess appears like a small girl, she is said to be very powerful. The goddess has a crown that shines like fire and it appears like a five-headed snake. The goddess has four hands.

There is only a small entrance to the sanctum sanctorum.

A speciality of the temple is that splashing its sacred water on a person afflicted with chicken pox is said to relieve that person of the disease.

The festivals celebrated in the temple are Vinayaga Chathurthi, Deepavali, Thirukarthigai, Pongal, Mahasivarathri and Tamil New Year’s Day.

The goddess has the power to draw devotees to her so much so that people travel long distances to pray here.
