Rama Ravi’s rivetting Bhairavi

Rama Ravi, along with her daughter Nandita, has created a niche for herself with some cerebral music. Their concert at the Nanganallur Anjaneyar Hanumath Jayanthi Music Festival proved that they are artistes of rare genre. Rama Ravi hails from the renowned Brinda-Mukhta school and is an eminent vocalist.

The curtain-raiser was a Varnam in Abhogi ‘Evaribhodhana’. They plunged unobtrusively into Bhairavi for ‘Rakshabedave’, which was the main piece. The mother daughter duo gave a detailed exposition of Bhairavi which was an amalgam of idealism and skill. They showcased varied facets of the raga delicately and their swara cascades highlighted their musical prowess. The evergreen ‘Brochevarevarura’ in Khamas by Mysore Vasudevachariar was suffused with bhakthi.

Pakala Ramdas, who accompanied on the violin, followed them energetically with a smile. His delineation of Bhairavi was commendable.

Neyveli Skandasubramaniam on the mridangam was at his best, lifting the concert with his adroit strokes.

Alathur Raja Ganesh is a seasoned artiste who transformed the kanjira into a vessel of music.

The tani of Skandasubramaniam and Raja Ganesh highlighted their musical acumen and penchant for rhythm.
